Andy Lau helped actors Dicky Cheung and Kent Cheng out of financial rut

It seems Hong Kong actor Louis Khoo isn’t the only Good Samaritan in the entertainment industry. Fellow actors say that veteran actor Andy Lau is another such do-gooder.
In a recent episode of Hong Kong talk show More Than Mall, hosts Wayne Lai and Louis Yuen posed a rhetorical question to guest Dicky Cheung – if he would save Andy Lau or Kwong Wa (the actor played opposite Cheung in the popular TVB series Journey To The West) if both of them fell into the water at the same time.
Cheung replied that he would save Andy Lau and went on to share details of why he is indebted to Lau, “he really did rescue me before.”
Cheung divulged that he was once on the brink of bankruptcy during the 1997 financial crisis because of poor investment choices. At that point, Lau reached out to Cheung to sign him on. Cheung said to Lau, “Okay but I am almost bankrupt. Can you help me with my mortgage?” Lau agreed without hesitation, giving him a sum of money to tide him through his financial crisis.
Another Hong Kong actor Kent Cheng (better known as Fei Mao or Fat Cat) also shared that Lau offered him job opportunities, helping him out of a financial rut of HK$20 million (S$3.4 million) when his film company failed.
Cheng was the producer of Lau’s 2007 movie Brothers. The pair also worked together in Chasing The Dragon in 2017.
Cheng remains grateful to Lau till this day. “How many people can you say are sincerely helping those in the film industry? I never expected that Lau would help someone like me instead of just helping newcomers,” said Cheng.
