Queen and their manager considering Bohemian Rhapsody sequel

A sequel to the Academy Award-winning Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody could be in the works, revealed a music video director close to the iconic British rock band earlier this week.

Rudi Dolezal, director of several videos for the band, told celebrity news site Page Six that Queen and their manager Jim Beach are planning a follow-up to where the first film left off.

Dolezal voiced his confidence in "a sequel that starts with Live Aid", adding that the possible second film is now “being heavily discussed in the Queen family”.

Beach also served as the producer for the film, which has made more than US$870 million (S$1.176 billion) worldwide. The biopic of the life of Queen's lead singer Freddie Mercury won four Oscars last month and was nominated for best picture.

Dolezal first began working with Queen in 1985 when he directed the music video to One Vision, the first single after the band’s Live Aid performance, which capped off the film. In total, he worked on some 30 videos for the band and its members, ending with Mercury’s final video shoot for These Are The Days Of Our Lives in 1991, the same year he passed.

Of course, much work stands between chatter about a new film and having it brought to life. Bohemian Rhapsody itself took over 20 years to be produced, with Sacha Baron Cohen once tapped for the lead role.

Another concern lies with the plot itself. Mercury’s life was to end some six years after the events chronicled in the first film, following his being diagnosed with HIV in 1987. Whether this will prove sufficient or appropriate material for a sequel is still up in the air.
